What is an NDE?

The term "NDE" is an abbreviation for near-death experience, an event usually triggered by a life  threatening traumatic experience that has a significantly noticeable impact on the individual's outlook on life.
The NDE has been compared to a kind of spiritual awakening or a mystical experience.

You are not your body. It is just something you wear for a while, because living in the earthplane is infinitly more meaningful and more involved if you are encased in its trappings and subject to its rules.

--- "Coming Back to Life" by P. M. H. Atwater

While there are many common characteristics in NDE’s, there can
also be many variations.  My story doesn’t follow the generally accepted pattern.  To begin with, I had a strange “life review” while sitting at a red light at the same intersection where the NDE would take place – 2 days later!  I clearly remember having my life experiences stream through my consciousness.  I was then asked, “If you had the choice to stay here or to go, which would you  choose?”  I thought of my 2 children, Dylan and Holly, who were 16 and 12 at the time and saw the outcome of both choices.  I mentally replied, “I’d stay here.”  That was July 13, 1993.

On July 15, 1993, I was in a devastating car wreck.  While going through that same intersection, out of the corner of my eye I saw something and turned to see a truck with a large steel brushguard attached to the front coming rapidly toward me.  (My comment?   “Uh-0h.”)  I heard a loving, calm, but commanding voice say, “Don’t look!”  So I turned my face away just as the truck hit my car.  The impact was so hard that all the windows in the car exploded.  I’m sure that if I’d been looking, I’d have had severe facial cuts and might have been blinded by the force of the flying glass from the driver’s-side window.

There was absolutely no pain at this point.  The impact felt like nothing more than being lightly bumped on my left side, after which I simply popped straight up out of my body.  I hovered there in very bright light about 30-40 feet above my car.  I watched people getting out of their cars and running to my car, one of them with a walkie-talkie.  I saw the man who hit me get out of his truck, uninjured.  I heard people shouting and saw people coming from the house on the corner.  Everything had a shimmering glow around it, but it was all very clear.

When I looked up, I saw an angel about 50 feet in front of me.  The angel smiled and as soon as I had a desire to speak to it, I felt its presence floating right next to me.  My first comment was, “Hey, I’m not supposed to be here.”  The angel assured me that I most definitely was and that this was an experience I was meant to have.  And it really did feel as if everything was in perfect order.

The angel told me some of what was to come while I was immersed in a brilliant white light.  It felt as though I was floating in an ocean of love, a love beyond description. I was told that I still had the choice to go with him or return to my body.  I stated my choice and then saw the angel smiling at me once more.  Suddenly I was floating above my car again, the angel waved to me, and my soul whooshed back into my body through the top of my head.

It felt like I landed with a thump and at that point, I instantly felt intense pain and could not breathe.  I blacked out almost immediately.  It took about 3 years to recover physically, and more than that to fully integrate all the other changes that came about as a result of the NDE.

In 1993, there wasn’t a whole lot of information on Near Death Experiences, and I was not prepared for the spiritual, emotional, and mental changes that occurred.   I found a book that really helped me understand what was going on: Coming Back to Life: the After-Effects of the Near Dearth Experience by P.M.H. Atwater.   Because the after-effects can definitely cause some confusion!  If you’d like to learn more about NDE’s and P.M.H. Atwater, you can go to www.cinemind.com/atwater.
